Training For Life In The Navy

People who enlist in the Navy first have to pass a boot camp conducted at the Navy’s Recruit Training Command or RTC. Located on the shores of the Great lakes, Illinois, this indoor training facility conducts weapons training, naval skill training, and others. RTC also has something called the VESSEL (Virtual Environments for Ship and Shore Experiential Learning).It’s basically a virtual reality simulation that trains recruits how to respond to different crisis situations.

For people who aspire to become naval officers, training starts at Officer Candidate School or Officer Development School. Officers Candidate School is located in Newport, Rhode Island. This is a 12 week training course that prepares college graduates to become Navy Officers. Also located in Newport, Officer Development School offers a 5 week training program for commissioned Officers and prepares them to be Staff Corps Officers.

Daily Duties

Work life of naval personnel is versatile to say the least. They usually have a lot of different types of duties when they are onboard the ship or in the ground. Some of those activities include performing maintenance work, providing security, and keeping a watch for unauthorized vessels and ships.

Life At Sea

As of now navy ship deployments last for 6 months. This means navy personnel have to stay away from their family and share living space with hundreds of other people who are stationed with them. Surviving in these conditions requires a lot of patience and mutual understanding. It’s also important to don an attitude to follow any command given by superior officers or the captain.

Life On Shore

Navy personnel have to live on naval bases when they are on shore. Living quarters are provided for both single sailors and as well as for personnel with families. A standard naval base come equipped with a lot of amenities such as shopping malls, recreational centers, movie theaters, and even golf courses. Naval bases also have state of the art medical facilities for sailors and their family members.
