As a staff corps of the Medical Department, the Medical Corps consist of commissioned medical officers such as physicians with a DO or MD degree. They must have minimum one year post graduate clinical training and state medical license. The Medical Department of the Army recruited its first physicians of Medical Corps in 1775, during the Continental Congress. In 1908, the designation, Medical Corps was made official by the US Congress.At present, the Medical Corps of the US Army consists of more than 4,400 active duty physicians. They represent all the specialties as well as sub specialties of civilian medicine.
